The fixed layout format is better suited for documents that include a large number of graphics, audio and video content. This format is better suited for children's book, cookbooks, textbooks, and comic books.
You can create a book using any Pages template, or you can use templates specifically designed for creating books. Portrait book templates are based on word-processing documents, and can be exported as reflowable or fixed layout EPUBs. Landscape book templates are based on page layout documents, and can be exported as fixed layout EPUBs.
These features from your Pages document are exported to EPUB with fixed layout only. You can still export documents that include these features with reflowable layout, but these features won't appear in the exported EPUB.
You can export a page layout document as a fixed layout EPUB. You can export a word-processing document as a reflowable or fixed layout EPUB. For best results when exporting as a reflowable EPUB, use a word-processing document with inline images.
Digital content has transformed information consumption in ways one would have never imagined be it fixed layout ePUB version or reflowable one. Accessing and consuming content has seen a 360o flip in every industry, but nowhere is it more evident than in the publishing industry.
The earlier version of ePUB could only convert eBooks into one standard layout- the reflowable format. The new ePUB3 version has brought a fixed layout into the picture. Publishers and authors now have to decide which format to choose at the time of conversion, based on the kind of content.
Fixed layout eBooks, on the other hand, have additional interactivities. One can include animations and videos in a fixed layout eBook. The text to speech feature can be added for users to listen to the eBook, this feature also helps people with visual impairment or a reading disability.
Reflowable layout costs less than the fixed layout ePUB because they are usually cheaper to produce. ePUB supports reflowable layout, so one just has to convert the file into a responsive and reflowable ePUB format.
Based on the type of content, the author or the publisher must decide which layout they want the eBook to be published in. The main differentiating factor is that reflowable content changes its placement according to different screen sizes; while the fixed layout content does not.
An EPUB publication is typically represented by a single package document. This document includesmetadata used by reading systems to present the content to the user, such as the title andauthor for display in a bookshelf as well as rendering metadata (e.g., whether the content isreflowable or has a fixed layout). It also provides a manifest of resources and includes a spine that lists the default sequence in which to render documents as a user progressesthrough the content. Refer to 5. Package document for the requirements for the packagedocument.
EPUB publications by default are intended to reflow to fit the available screen space. It is alsopossible to create publications that have pixel-precise fixed layouts using images and/or CSSpositioning. The metadata to control layouts are defined in 8. Layout rendering control.
EPUB creators should use unprefixed properties and reading systems should supportcurrent CSS specifications. This specification retains the widely used prefixedproperties from [epubcontentdocs-301] but removes support for the less-used ones. EPUBcreators should use CSS-native solutions for the removed properties wheneveravailable.
EPUB creators should note that supportfor container-constrained scripting in reading systems is only recommended inreflowable documents [epub-rs-33]. Furthermore, reading system support infixed-layout documents is optional.

EPUB creators define fixed layouts using a set of package documentproperties to control the rendering in reading systems. In addition, they set the dimensions of each fixed-layout document in its respectiveEPUB content document.
EPUB 3 affords multiple mechanisms for representing fixed-layout content. When fixed-layoutcontent is necessary, the EPUB creator's choice of mechanism will depend on many factorsincluding desired degree of precision, file size, accessibility, etc. This section does notattempt to dictate the EPUB creator's choice of mechanism.
In this example, the document's layout is set to pre-paginated (i.e., it isdefined to be a fixed-layout document). Furthermore, media queries[mediaqueries-3] are used to apply different style sheets for three different devicecategories. Note that the media queries only affect the style sheet applied to thedocument; the size of the content area set in the viewport meta tag isstatic.
The rendition:page-spread-left and rendition:page-spread-rightproperties were created to allow the use of a single vocabulary for all fixed-layoutproperties. EPUB creators can use either property set, but older reading systems mightonly recognize the unprefixed versions.
In this example, the EPUB creator intends the reading system to create a two-pagefixed-layout center plate using synthetic spreads in any device orientation. Note thatthe EPUB creator has left spread behavior for the other (reflowable) parts undefined,since the global value of rendition:spread initializes to autoby default.
Although control over the rendering of EPUB content documents to create fixed layouts is an obvious need not handled by othertechnologies, there are also considerations for reflowable content that are unique to EPUB publications (e.g., how to handle the flow of content in the viewport). This section definesproperties that allow EPUB creators to control presentation aspects of reflowable content.
EPUB creators should also be aware that reading system support for playback of bothreflowable and fixed-layout EPUB content documents is not guaranteed. Differences in readingsystem pagination strategies mean that some reading systems will only support mediaoverlays in one or the other layout format.
The default vocabulary for the epub:type attribute isthe EPUB 3 Structural Semantics Vocabulary [epub-ssv-11]. EPUB creators MAY includeunprefixed terms that are not part of this vocabulary, but the preferred method for adding customsemantics is to use prefixes for them. Refer to D.1 Vocabulary association mechanisms for more information.
The advantage of EPUB and MOBI is that both formats display reflowable content (the text adjusts to fit the size of the screen on your reading device) as well as fixed-width layout. Both formats are also open standard, which means that they are free and publicly available, although rules exist regarding their usage.
This EDRLab application is in constant development and aims at becoming a reference for accessing EPUB 3 publications in reflow or fixed layout format, audiobooks and visual narratives, PDF documents and DAISY 2.02 and 3 accessible ebooks; LCP protected or not.
You should use a PDF when uploading a print book to Amazon, IngramSpark, or another print service. They should never be used as eBooks. If you need the fixed layout that a PDF can provide, use the fixed EPUB format.
You'll need to stick with a portrait book template if you want a Reflowable EPUB. That's because landscape templates don't support this export format. If you're going for a fixed layout, either orientation works.
For this tutorial, let's go with a Fixed layout and a landscape ebook template. We've chosen the Story template from Books > Books---Landscape in the template chooser. It's a page layout document.
Any problems found arereported in a nice, easy to use list. Clicking any entry in the list shows yousome help about that error as well as giving you the option to auto-fix thaterror, if the error can be fixed automatically. The epub 3 standard, however, introduced fixed-layout epubs: everything on the screen has an absolute position. Fixed-layout epubs lose much of their adaptability but still recognise the device and app they are displayed with.
Since the layout is not fixed, you will be given the option to customize it and change it for your own needs: the details differ by device, but you are usually given a couple of fonts to choose from (usually a serif, a monospace and a sans-serif) and can change font size and line spacing. And we have not even mentioned great large print and text-to-speech opportunities most e-readers come with.
There are dozens of ebook formats, but most of us Earthly mortals will only meet a couple during our lifetime. E-readers usually prefer a specific format but most of them will still accept multiple formats. The difference between the formats is mainly in how well they handle fixed-layout and reflowable books, if they support DRM (digital copy protection), whether they support pictures and multimedia content and what are their preferred devices.
While technically not an ebook format, this is the one most people are familiar with. Designed for printing and easy, platform neutral sharing of fixed-layout documents, it is no surprise that reflowing the text is problematic. (It can be done, though.) The big backside of pdf is that it is not accepted by any of the major ebook stores.
Sure, a PC user is not necessarily going to read a whole magazine/book from a desktop monitor. But many researchers, editors etc need to consult or flick through a fixed .ePUB while at their desk. And have it look as intended, ideally in non-clunky freeware. 2b1af7f3a8
