Games such as the F1 series take a rather serious approach to racing, concentrating on realistic reproduction of racing tracks, terrain and weather, as well as the handling of your car in order to really test your driving skills.
The main single-player Career mode throws you straight in as a pro driver representing your team in five different types of race events that take place on realistic reproductions of tracks ranging from Indianapolis Speedway to the streets of Barcelona. Touring events are perhaps the most realistic, dropping you into a crowded grid where you have to jostle with closely packed rival cars and carefully pick your way to the front of the pack. Open Wheel racing is the most demanding, though, with very light, rear-drive cars that require really careful handling. At the other extreme are the Tuner events, which are more like traditional Grid games, allowing you to entertain the crowds as you show off your drifting and other skills.
The original Micro Machines games were very popular on various consoles way back when. This 2017 update is an attempt to recapture the retro charm of the original games, whilst also introducing more modern online, multiplayer elements.
That makes it a good game for a bit of post-pub fun with your friends, but Micro Machines will also be fun for younger players who can just enjoy the table-top racing action with their favourite toy cars, fire engines and other vehicles.
But, once the engine starts revving up, and the dust starts flying, the game does a great job of capturing the high-speed thrills of racing, as you tilt over and go screeching around a hairpin bend, and weaving through the field to grab the lead. Along with the Career mode, the game also allows you to represent your country in the Monster Energy mode, or you can create a custom series of races in Championship mode. Alternatively, for a quick fix of two-wheel action, you can tackle individual races in the Time Attack and Grand Prix modes.
With its screaming V8 engines, chess-like strategy, and extreme handling, this is one of the most realistic Mac race games on this list. That realism makes it a challenging game indeed but put in the effort and the game pays you back with interest. The game also features every car and circuit from the official Formula 1 2017 season, a huge career mode, a new gameplay mode, invitational events, and basically everything a Formula 1 fan could ask for.
Unlike other biking games, Descenders randomly generates the downhill path each time you play, giving you new experiences each ride. The challenge is to get downhill far enough before you run out of lives. It is a simple yet well-executed concept. Their developer team is also very active, providing frequent new updates.
Featuring both online multiplayer and offline campaign racing, there is little Horizon Chase 2 does not offer to the avid racer. It is now available on the App store, removing the need to worry about technical issues and other bugs and glitches.
Occupying a space somewhere between a racing sim and an arcade game, GRID Autosport excels at offering something for everyone, including everything if you so choose. From open-wheel to endurance, street racing and more, GRID Autosport allows you to live out your motorsport championship dreams.
If off-road racing is your thing, Gravel, as the name implies, is the game for you. An arcade racing sim purely for off-road racers, Gravel provides a large variety of races and tracks, although there are some complaints that the base game is limited for the price, with an emphasis on paid DLC. Furthermore, the DLC is Windows only, leaving Mac users with only the base game.
If the main thing you like about racing is drifting, Absolute Drift has you covered. A unique game in that drifting is all you do, Absolute Drift nonetheless gives you a variety of cars and challenges to keep things interesting.
With minimal system requirements and a beta build for macOS Catalina that seems to be working, Absolute Drift should run fine on most Macs out there, though a controller is essential. Most standard controllers seem to work, but as with other games, there are rare reports of certain controllers not working.

Indeed, I've always been drawn to racing games that are more about destruction and debris than actual racing. Guess it's just my inner kid enjoying some smashy-smashy. Which brings us to today's deal.
And is it worth playing? So much yes. Though originally released in 2012, the graphics are splendid. Just as important, this isn't some buttoned-up racing sim that's all about accurate physics and real-world cars. (No offense if that's your cup of tea; to me it's really boring.) It's all jumps and stunts and crashes and mayhem.

"Dirt Rally" is a departure for the long-running Codemasters franchise, with the game based around rallying instead of multiple driving disciplines. Like the original "Colin McRae Rally" games that slowly became the "Dirt" franchise, players are able to drive long and hazardous tracks set in forests and on hillsides, in a variety of racing conditions.
emig647 said: Are there any wheels that work with macs anymore? I tried this game without a wheel and it is extremely tough. With a wheel makes it much more approachable. Be interesting to see how it ports over. The Logitech G920 and G29 wheels should work fine. There's a driver for them on their website. You have to go under Support, then Drivers and select Mac and you'll see a all-in-one driver for gaming devices that includes support for both the G920 and G29 racing wheel/pedal package.
"Codemasters has succeeded in curating another superlative festival of driving," he said in his DiRT 3 review. "It's a package more inclusive than any of its predecessors, shot through with the quiet innovations that have defined the studio's more recent efforts. With its off-road events celebrating the series' past and Gymkhana presenting a potentially bright new future, it's another great racing game from an outfit that's proving itself to be a master of its craft."
