Group B of the 2022 FIFA World Cup took place from 21 to 29 November 2022. The group consisted of national association football teams from England, Iran, the United States and Wales. Both England and the United States progressed to the round of 16 undefeated. England won the group, winning two games and drawing the other, while the United States won one and drew the other two. Iran finished the group third, having won a single game, with Wales finishing fourth with a single point.
Group B was widely described as the \"group of death\" before the tournament.[6] It had the highest average FIFA ranking of any group,[7] and controversy given by the political hostility existing between Iran and the United Kingdom, and between Iran and the United States.[8][9][10]
Many Wales fans in attendance at their first match as part of the nation's official LGBTQ+ supporters group wore the group's rainbow Wales bucket hats. Women who had these hats, including former women's team captain Laura McAllister, were prohibited from entering the stadium with them; McAllister reported that the security officials told her it was \"a banned symbol\".[23] At the same match, American journalist Grant Wahl was reportedly detained for 25 minutes when attempting to enter the stadium wearing a Pride shirt, being told it was \"political\" and being asked if he was British; he said that FIFA later apologised to him and security allowed him to enter with the shirt.[24]
The match was delayed for seven minutes in the first half after head to head collision between the Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and defender Majid Hosseini.[32] Beiranvand initially seemed to be convinced to continue playing by Iran captain Ehsan Hajsafi despite appearing to be dazed and taking his gloves and shirt off after he received treatment, drawing criticism from the brain injury charity Headway.[33] After collapsing on the field minutes later, Beiranvand was substituted for Hossein Hosseini.[34] England scored three first-half goals: Jude Bellingham opened with his first ever senior England goal in the 35th minute, with Bukayo Saka (in the 43rd minute) and Raheem Sterling (in the first minute of stoppage time) being the other contributors to the scoreline up to this point.[35]
Marcus Rashford had the best chance of the first half, but his chipped shot was saved by Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward. The first half ended goalless, however, Rashford scored a direct free kick in the 51st minute to give England the lead. Shortly after the restart, Rashford won the ball in the Welsh defence and passed to Kane, who crossed the ball low from the right for Phil Foden to score at the back post. Rashford got his second of the game in the 68th minute with a shot from deep inside the Welsh penalty area that went through the goalkeeper's legs.[60] The victory was enough for England to finish at the top of the group, whilst Wales finished at the bottom with just one point.[61]
Fair play points would have been used as tiebreakers if the overall and head-to-head records of teams were tied. These were calculated based on yellow and red cards received in all group matches as follows:[71]
The demands for them to be tactically flexible were evident last summer. At Euro 2020 Southgate selected a back four in the group stage games but opted for a back three in knockout fixtures against Germany (round of 16) and Italy (final).
One became two with almost the final kick of the game as Rezaien dinked home Team Melli's second to cap an incredible finale to what looked on paper and for 85 plus minutes like being just another goalless group game.
Advancement scenarios have gotten cut and dry for the United States as they only need to win against Iran to reach five points and a goal differential of at least +1. Wales will need an upset win against group favorites England to reach four points with the hopes of improving their goal differential, currently at -2, compared to the Three Lions, currently at +4. Reminder: A draw or a loss for the U.S. is out of the picture if they want to advance. It's win and you're in mode.
But is Pulisic up to the task of carrying the load It's a responsibility that has, at least outwardly, weighed heavy. The U.S. certainly have more talent playing beside him in Aaronson, Weah and Reyna than there has been in the past. But if the U.S. are to make to the group stage, Pulisic will need to be at his best.
Prediction: Group B is deceptively difficult. At No. 21 in the FIFA rankings, Iran are the worst-ranked team. And while those rankings have to be taken with some skepticism, every other group has a team ranked at least 30th or worse. For that reason, the U.S. team's odds are 50-50 in terms of advancement. Based on recent form, their odds don't look to be improving. Health will be a huge factor, but at this stage, it looks like the U.S. will fall just short. -- Jeff Carlisle
Wales reached their first World Cup since 1958 after a dramatic and emotional playoff against Ukraine. By their own admission, Wales had the will of the world against them in September given the war in Ukraine, but a Gareth Bale free kick was enough to snatch a 1-0 win and a place in Qatar. Prior to that, Wales finished second in a group containing Belgium (winners) and Czech Republic (third), winning four of their eight matches and losing only once (to Belgium in March 2021). Head coach Robert Page was rewarded for qualification with a new four-year contract in September.
Counter-attacking. Wales averaged 45.1% possession in their World Cup qualification group and that figure dropped to 40.9% in their six UEFA Nations League games against Poland, Netherlands and Belgium (five of which they lost). Wayne Hennessey is a fine goalkeeper, and Wales will try to stay defensively compact before hitting teams on the break through the pace of Dan James, the guile of Aaron Ramsey and the star quality of Bale.
Wales face a tough task to replicate their recent tournament heroics. Nevertheless, although England are clear favourites to top the group, Page's side will expect to be competitive for one of the top two spots, and the fact they play England last could help in that regard. It might be only the first game, but United States vs. Wales already feels huge for both team's prospects. The round of 16 might be the best they can hope for.
Having made their World Cup debut in 1978, Iran return for a sixth time, and a third in a row, having exited at the group stage at each of the previous attempts. An 18-match AFC qualification journey that started all the way back in September 2019 saw Iran win 14 matches, draw once and lose just three times on route to Qatar. An early hiccup in the form of back-to-back defeats to Bahrain and Iraq proved insignificant as Team Melli topped their group in the second round. In the decisive third round, they were as clinical as ever, winning eight of their 10 matches to book their place at the World Cup with three games to spare, finishing ahead of South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.
Iran's approach under Queiroz has always been defined by an exceptional defensive solidity. The side did not concede a single goal in their first five games at the AFC Asian Cup 2019, and their record in international tournaments under the Portuguese coach includes an impressive 10 clean sheets in 16 games. At Russia 2018, they conceded only twice in a group that featured the past two European champions at the time: Spain and Portugal. Expect more of the same in Qatar. Iran will make it difficult for the likes of Pulisic, Kane and Bale to find a way through.
In 2014, Iran picked up just one point from their group. Four years later, that tally was up to four points despite a more difficult draw. With years of experience under their belts and a coach who knows the ins and outs of this team, it might finally be time for Iran to reach the round of 16 at the sixth time of asking. -- Wael Jabir.
With goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand ruled out as a result of the concussion he sustained against England, his replacement in that game, Hossein Hosseini, will start.
That win give the USA second place in the group and a date with Group A winners Netherlands in the first Round of 16 match of the tournament on Saturday morning. England's contest against Senegal takes place the next day, Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
England and the USMNT made it out of Group B ahead of Iran and Wales as an absolutely blockbuster group brimmed with narratives throughout. The Three Lions took care of business with minimum fuss and won the group, while the USA finished second and were also unbeaten as they beat Iran in a thrilling final group game.
Iran won 2-1 in the 1998 World Cup as the U.S. lost every single group stage game that year. Two years later in a friendly, both teams played to a 1-1 draw. With this being the final group game for the USMNT in 2022, it could have some important implications depending on how the first two games go.
Featuring England, the United States, Wales and Iran, nearly every fixture in this group provides a built-in narrative. Whether it's the Home Nations showdown of Wales vs. England, the politicial undercurrent of Iran vs. USA, or the colonial history of England vs. United States, several matches in the group come with ready-made storylines on top of the massive stakes already at play in the World Cup.
England has nearly secured its round of 16 berth after a 6-2 win against Iran and a goalless draw against the USA in its first two matches. A win will assure England a top spot in the group. With four points and a goal difference of +4, the Three Lions can afford a defeat and only a heavy thrashing at the hands of Wales could put its place in jeopardy.
England won eight of their 10 games in qualifying to top the group, scoring 39 and conceding just three along the way, but a run of six games without a win and Nations League relegation has caused plenty of concern ahead of the tournament in Qatar. 59ce067264
