It used to be that cracked servers would allow players to log on to another players account because there was no account password. To fix this, they used a plugin that had an account system with a username and password which could be entered before joining.

When online-mode is set to true, people can only use their minecraft name that they choosen when they purchased the game. You login to the launcher with your Mojang account and since the game (Minecraft) is bound to your Mojang account it will autimatically detect it and sign you in with your Minecraft name. Nobody else can use your name nor can you use a name that is already being used by another account.

I have a few friends who play cracked versions. Unfortunately, they're missing out on the full experience. Though the Cracked version allows you to play Minecraft normally, it's usually only effective for Singleplayer. Overall, Cracked is good if you're just checking out the game, but if you're planning on playing long-term, I'd strongly recommend getting Premium.

Fun fact: A cracked server is simply a server that set "online-mode" to false - that's it (they may or may not have additional plugins/mods); and yes, this is actually a setting that Mojang added to the game, so I'd assume that yes, legitimate accounts can connect, and will also probably function as normal (only cracked players, using pirated clients that bypass login, won't have skins or the like because they simply don't have a Minecraft account which is where other clients would download their skin from (cracked players themselves can use a resource pack to get a custom skin that only they can see; in fact, even legitimate players must do this in older versions, such as 1.6.4, where I replaced "steve.png" with my own skin in my own modded versions):Server checks connecting players against Minecraft account database. Set this to false only if the player's server is not connected to the Internet. Hackers with fake accounts can connect if this is set to false! If minecraft.net is down or inaccessible, no players can connect if this is set to true. I have no idea why Mojang would ever add, or keep in, such a setting (one valid reason is for testing/debugging, but I always make sure I disable/remove any debug code/settings before releasing a mod), which has been in the game since basically forever (even back in 2009 there was a setting called "verify-names" which appears to have a similar function) and is probably the single biggest reason Minecraft is so easy to pirate/"crack" (along with the client itself requiring a "-demo" command-line argument to enable demo mode, thus a "cracked" launcher only has to omit this to disable demo mode for any version (versions older than 1.3 don't support it at all) and can download the files straight from Mojang's servers without any modifications; by contrast, if the game itself checked if you were logged into a paid account, even to play singleplayer, then it would actually have to be modified, for every version you wanted to crack).

Every time I connect to a premium server on my mac, it says that authentication servers are down. I asked my brother to join the same ip and he managed to get in. Me and my brother are on the same internet connection. I have no firewall. I tried doing the sudo nano /etc/hosts terminal but I see no lines mentioning "mojang".
