Because the safest crash is the one that never happens, the Tahoe and Suburban are equipped with standard and available technologies that serve as an extra set of eyes and ears to the driver, including an available Safety Alert Seat that vibrates if the system determines the driver is at risk of colliding with another vehicle.
Nationally, in 2020, 14 people were killed in ambulance crashes that occurred during lights and siren operation, 9 of the 14 deaths were occupants in vehicles other than the ambulance. 12 people were killed in crashes involving fire trucks with lights and siren in operation, 10 of the 12 fatalities were to occupants in vehicles other than the fire truck[1].
In 2009, there were 1,579 ambulance crash injuries, and most EMS vehicle crashes occur when operating with lights and siren. Emergency medical vehicle crashes are more often at intersections, more often at traffic signals, and more often with multiple injuries, including 84% involving three or more people.
In February 2022, 14 national and international EMS and Fire associations published a joint statement encouraging agencies to reduce lights and siren responses. -ems-groups-issue-joint-statement-ls-responses
To help make responses safer for the community, and our personnel, MedStar is participating with 50 other EMS agencies across the country in a quality improvement project to evaluate processes to reduce the number of calls we respond to using lights and siren, limiting those types of response to truly time-critical medical responses, such as heart attacks, serious breathing problems, and serious trauma.
All white emergency vehicle lights are not a common sight on the road and are usually not operated by emergency vehicle drivers. Instead, if you see an all white emergency vehicle light set-up on the road, it is likely a caution vehicle. Caution vehicles are driven by utility companies, construction companies, storm chasers, and a few others. Since these vehicles are not emergency vehicles, these drivers cannot request the right of way from other drivers and must obey all traffic laws.
To explain why the Doppler effect occurs, we need to start with a few basic features of wave motion. Waves come in a variety of forms: ripples on the surface of a pond, sounds (as with the siren above), light, and earthquake tremors all exhibit periodic wave motion.
So why do we hear a change in pitch for passing sirens? The pitch we hear depends on the frequency of the sound wave. A high frequency corresponds to a high pitch. So while the siren produces waves of constant frequency, as it approaches us the observed frequency increases and our ear hears a higher pitch.
After it has passed us and is moving away, the observed frequency and pitch drop. The true pitch of the siren is somewhere between the pitch we hear as it approaches us, and the pitch we hear as it speeds away.

I have a warning chime that has started to sound intermittently while I drive. It first started a few weeks ago, and it sounded like a sick bell. After awhile, it began sounding like a single "bong". Now it's "bong bong" when I drive, it's intermittent, but it's more often. It seems to be when the speedometer reaches between 25 and 40 mph. When I was on the highway yesterday for about 45 minutes, I did not hear it at all. But driving today in town, I kept hearing it. There are no corresponding dashboard lights to indicate that anything is wrong, and nothing has happened to indicate that something is failing in the car. Can anyone help? It's driving me nuts!

Mounting the ControlWall Mounting1. Release the front assembly from the back case by depressing the two locking tabs at the top of the unit with the blade of a medium size screwdriver. Separate the front and back case assemblies by rotating the front case so that it is perpendicular to the back case and unsnapping (releasing) the two hooks from the back case. Feed the field wiring through the appropriate openings in the back case. Use tie-wraps to secure the wiring to the built-in wire loops as needed. Mount the back case to a sturdy wall. Attach the front and back cases by connecting the hooks on the front case to the attachments on the rear case. Once attached, the hooks will support the front case and allow you to make the wiring connections. After all wiring connections have been made, snap the front case and back case closed and ensure that the control is secured by the locking tabs.FRONT CASE
