The first big reveal of The Last Remnant is the fact that the game has a full-fledged battle system, which is a big change from the auto-battle system common in JRPGs. Irina, the playable protagonist, has a unit called a 'Remnant' under her control, as she is one of the 'Four Divine Beasts' that formed from a single Remnant. She can have up to six Remnants under her control, making her the first example of a playable character with multiple units under her command. One of those Remnants, Rush, has its own fourth job, that of being a healer/support unit. In order to raise Rush's rank and improve its skills, players need to give the unit special assignments, that is, those kind of commands that are only available when a specific job is in play. When paired with a different job, that is, the class of your playable characters, the Remnant system adds a lot of depth to the gameplay, and the choices you make can have a large impact on how well your characters are able to do in battle.

The Remnant system is fun and intuitive, but it can also seem to be a bit of a chore to manage all those units and keep them happy. Many aspects of the game that could have been streamlined instead end up being quite complex, and the inability to use the'remnant gauge' to keep your Remnants at peak efficiency feels wrong. (I'm not sure if the game is mod-friendly at this point, but that would have been the best solution if that were the case). In any case, the Remnant system is not the main draw of the game, at least not to begin with - and nor is the rest of the game as such. For starters, Remnant units are pretty easy to raise, and even though they are divided into several ranks, they can keep their stat increases with experience gained. I actually found it relatively easy to fill the various slots of the party with high-quality units.

The fighting is fairly traditional, with a standard turn-based battle system. Most of the special moves are executed with the X button, but there are a bunch of special attacks that can be used with the R button, as well as Super Arts. These Super Arts can be mastered (the game has several choice of mastery levels) and, when used during battle, they cause attacks to deal extra damage to enemy units.
